Omiš - The pirate city

The city of Omiš looks as though it was carved into the mighty rocks that rise above it, while at their foot flows the famous river Cetina, known for its hydro power plants built at the beginning of the 20th century, and more recently as a popular location for rafting, kayaking and canoeing tours. Omiš is also remembered as a pirate city, ruled by the infamous dukes of Kačić during the Middle Ages.

Today, tourists can enjoy and participate in stories and details from the exciting history during Omiš evenings, while sailing along the Cetina river. When it comes to religious monuments, the Omiš area is home to 8 churches, with the main church being the parish church of Sv. Mihovil from the 17th century. The most attractive historical sites in the city are certainly the medieval fortress of Fortica and Mirabela (Peovica) on top of Omiš Dinara, offering a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding villages.
